What the 2026 NFL Draft Looks Like When You Run It Through a Predictive Stack
Draft valuation is a prediction problem. The franchises that treat it as one extract surplus value from picks 30 through 150. The franchises that treat it as a scouting ritual with a regression bolted on don't.
The 2026 Draft wrapped two weeks ago. The consensus narrative is already hardening around the top ten. That narrative will be wrong in specific, predictable ways. Not because the scouts missed. Because the scouting apparatus produces one kind of error and the modeling apparatus produces a different kind, and the franchises that combine them correctly beat the ones that don't.
Three picks from the 2026 Draft already make the case. Colton Hood, the Tennessee corner, sat at #21 on Daniel Jeremiah's board with NGS draft-model scores in the top six among all corners across production, athleticism, and overall. The only corner who graded higher was Mansoor Delane, who went sixth overall to the Chiefs. Hood fell to the Giants at #37. Carson Beck, the Miami quarterback, was CBS's #202 overall prospect and Kiper's #111. The Cardinals took him at #65, the first pick of the third round, a roughly fifty-pick swing above public consensus. De'Zhaun Stribling, the Ole Miss receiver, was #112 on the PFF board. The 49ers took him at #33, the first pick of the second round.
The pattern is visible every year. A consensus top-25 corner falls into the second round because his athletic profile does not match the media narrative. A receiver goes eighty picks earlier than the board suggested because one front office's scouting weighted him correctly — or incorrectly. A quarterback in the fringe-fourth-round tier triggers a fifty-pick swing because the team with the development-trajectory model sees something the public draftniks do not.
These are not upsets. They are signal.
01 · The feature engineering problem
The core reason draft prediction is hard is not lack of data. It is that the useful features are position-specific and most public discourse treats them as general.
For offensive linemen, the signal is in context-adjusted pressure rate allowed, relative to conference strength and opponent defensive front. Height, weight, and arm length matter, but they matter as filters, not predictors.
For receivers, separation-adjusted catch rate dominates raw catch rate by a wide margin once you control for target difficulty. Contested-catch rate is close to pure noise at the college level without tracking data to back it out of coverage quality.
For cornerbacks, the ratio of targeted snaps to coverage snaps, adjusted for scheme and opponent receiver quality, carries more NFL signal than any raw stat. Interception totals carry almost none.
For quarterbacks, pressure-adjusted EPA separates the prospects who project to starter-plus from the prospects who project to backup-plus. Completion percentage over expected adds marginal signal. Arm talent evaluations from scouts still add value that no public model has replicated.
This is not an exhaustive list. The point is that a "draft model" that uses position-generic features is almost worthless. A position-specific stack, fed by correctly engineered features, is not.
02 · Where analytics beats scouting, and where it doesn't
Analytics reliably beats scouting consensus at two positions: wide receiver and cornerback. Both are positions where college production translates to the NFL at measurable rates and where athletic testing data is available and relevant. Franchises that consistently outperform expected value at these positions in rounds two through five are almost always running serious modeling.
Analytics roughly matches scouting at running back, safety, and interior offensive line. Sample variance dominates.
Analytics still loses to scouting at quarterback, edge rusher, and off-ball linebacker. For quarterback, the reason is context: college offenses vary in ways that are hard to normalize without extensive film work. For edge rusher, pre-snap recognition and hand usage matter more than athletic profile at the NFL level, and neither is cheap to quantify from college film. For linebacker, range against NFL-speed backs and tight ends is a mental-processing skill that shows up in film study before it shows up in any stat.
A franchise that runs a pure model approach loses at those three positions. A franchise that runs a pure scouting approach loses at the first two. The combination wins.
03 · The compounding argument
The case for taking draft analytics seriously does not rest on any single pick. A 2% expected value edge per pick, compounded across seven rounds, across ten drafts, is a meaningful competitive advantage. It is the kind of edge that separates a team that makes the playoffs eight of ten years from one that makes it four of ten, holding coaching and quarterback quality roughly constant.

The three strong-agreement cases — Mendoza at 1, Delane at 6, Bain at 15 — are picks where consensus boards and the model converged on talent and slot. Those are the easy ones; everyone gets credit and nobody learns anything.
The three strong-disagreement cases are the ones to track. Hood at #37: model says he should have gone in the late teens. Beck at #65: public boards say fourth round, the Cardinals' development model says round two or early three. Stribling at #33: PFF board had him as a fourth-rounder, the 49ers took him with the first pick of the second. The Klein pick at #59 is the largest gap on this table at 126 spots, which is either the most courageous or the most indefensible selection in the top 60 — and if either Klein or Stribling produces, every public board needs to revisit how it weights tight end and receiver film against athletic testing.
The table is where the specific argument lives. The three disagreements are the places where either the consensus board is wrong or the model is wrong. Both are possible. The point is that the disagreements are visible and testable in four years.
04 · What a franchise draft-analytics stack actually ships
Three screens.
Board reconciliation. The team's consensus board and the model board, overlaid, with a single column per player showing delta and the top three features driving that delta. A GM should be able to look at any disagreement and see the reason in one glance.
In-draft simulation. During the actual draft, the stack updates in real time: who is still available, what the expected value at the current pick is, whether to trade back given realistic trade partners. This is not automated decision-making. It is real-time decision support so the GM's focus goes to judgment calls rather than lookup.
Four-year tracking. Every pick gets logged against model expectation at the time of selection. Four years later, the hit rate gets compared to model expectation, not just to consensus expectation. This is the feedback loop that lets a team improve its own model year over year instead of re-litigating the same scouting debates.
None of this is novel. The teams that run it well have been running it for five years. The teams that haven't caught up yet are still losing surplus value they don't know they're losing.
05 · The honest counter
Scouting still wins at pre-snap recognition evaluation, motor and work-ethic flags, medical risk, and off-field red flags. None of those collapse into a feature vector cleanly. Any franchise that treats analytics as a replacement for that work is going to miss in predictable ways on character and health. The right frame is that analytics and scouting are two different error-correction processes applied to the same underlying prediction problem. Neither is sufficient.
06 · What to watch over the next four years
The 2026 picks the public models liked and the scouts didn't, and the ones the scouts liked and models didn't, will resolve in the 2027–2030 window. Track them. Any franchise that cannot tell you, pick by pick, what its internal model predicted and what actually happened is not running this discipline. Any franchise that can is quietly compounding.
